6 reasons to visit Whitehorse, Yukon

It’s not far from the border of British Columbia, or the signposts for Alaska, so can be easily slotted into a west coast itinerary. 1. A mild climate
While Yukon sees a lot of snowfall throughout the year, it’s still one of the mildest cities in northern Canada. Its average temperature is −0.1 °C (31.8 °F) making it the warmest place in Yukon.
2. The northern lights
The main reason why everyone should venture into northern Canada at least once in their lifetime is the chance to see the northern lights. With short winter days that shy away from sunlight, the evening skies are the perfect dark hue to contrast this spectacular light show.
3. It’s an adventure playground
No matter what kind of adventurous activity you’re into, you’ll find it in Whitehorse. In summer you can get your walking boots on and explore the 8.5 million-year-old Miles Canyon, or set off for some wild camping. Then in winter you can satisfy any adrenaline cravings with skiing, ice fishing, snowmobiling, dog sledging and snowshoeing.

4. Amazing wildlife
The Yukon Wildlife Preserve spans 700 acres and is home to 13 species of northern Canadian mammals in their natural environment. The varied landscape of rocky mountainsides, wetlands and rolling hills allow for a multitude of species to thrive in its boundaries, such as mule deer, arctic foxes, wood bison, the Rocky Mountain elk and the Alaska Yukon moose.

If you’re needing directions or like to strike up conversations at the bar, there’s a local who will be more than happy to tell you their life story. The people of Whitehorse are a friendly bunch and love welcoming travellers to their beloved down-to-earth city.
6. A place to switch off

Known as The Wilderness City, there are plenty of easily-accessible hikes and camping grounds to turn off your phone and leave the worries of modern life behind.
